Where does your recycling end up?

Mixed Paper
goes to Louisiana to make boxes, or to Minneapolis to make the paperboard for General Mills cereal boxes.

Newspaper
is shipped to Mexico and made into Mexican newspapers or UPS overnight mailers.

Steel
is recycled in Illinois and made into rebar and structural steel.

Aluminum
is recycled in Tennessee to make new beverage containers.

Glass
is sent to Colorado to make Coors bottles, or to Oklahoma to make other food and beverage containers.

Plastics
go to an Alabama manufacturer that makes car battery cases and paint containers, as well as other plastic parts for the auto industry.

Other Plastics
are made into green strapping in Kentucky or are used in carpeting.

Trash / Recycling

Spring Cleanup 2017 - Curbside Pick up

  • The annual Grimes Spring cleanup is scheduled for Thursday May 18th, Friday May 19th, Saturday May 20th. There is a different day for each part of town. Check map to see which day your pickup will be on. All items must be placed at the curb by 6:00 am. The collection vehicles will make one pass down each residential street. This cleanup is for residential only. Place material at edge of street in a bag, box, containerized or tied in bundles no more than 4 feet in length or weigh over 40 lbs. Loose piles of trash will not be picked up. Business and residents that operate a business out of their home or anyone with excessive waste, must contact Waste Connections for a special collection. 
  • All large items (swing sets, play equipment, etc.) must be dismantled to the point that it can be handled by one person.
  • Items that will not be collected during spring cleanup include; yard waste, brush, tires, vehicles and/or major auto parts, waste oil, paint, flammables, batteries, solvents, household hazardous waste, railroad ties, large piles of building materials, concrete, brick or block. Hazardous waste, such as paint, oil, etc. can be disposed of at the Metro Waste Authority’s Regional Collection Center. Yard Waste / Appliance / Scrap Tire Drop off

  • Saturday May 20th and Sunday May 21st from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm at the City Shop, located at 1700 SE Destination Drive (The old FedEx building).
  • The City will provide dumpsters for yard waste and tire drop off.
  • White goods such as refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water heaters, and freezers will be accepted free of charge.
  • You must be a Grimes resident  to participate.
  • Each resident is limited to 5 scrap tires. Passenger vehicle or truck tires only (no tractor tires).
  • Accepted items include tree branches, leaves, and residential yard waste.
  • No compost bags or stickers are required.

Document Shredding

Document Shredding will be available free of charge on Saturday May 20th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at City Hall parking lot. 101 NE Harvey Street.
