In 2022, the City of Grimes saw record commercial development growth and residents reinvesting in their properties.
The year of strong growth had $162,454,105.84 in new permit valuations. That includes $109,812,50.98 in new commercial permit valuations, which is a 337% increase in new commercial permit valuations from 2021.
“This was a record year for commercial permit valuations,” said Development Services Director Alex Pfaltzgraff. “Our residents have asked for more restaurants, retail, and other services. We have seen commercial expansion touching on all these sectors. From medical to retail to industrial, we are seeing a variety of commercial developments.”
Grimes Chamber & Economic Development President/CEO Brain Buethe said businesses continue to invest in Grimes because of its logistical advantages and growing workforce.
“Much like people decide where to plant their roots, businesses are increasingly investing in Grimes because of continually developing quality-of-life amenities, destination-type attractions, and an increasing array of high-quality services the community offer,” said Buethe.
The City issued a total of 1221 permits. Basement finish permit valuations increased to $2,675,500.00 from $306,387.60 and residential addition permit valuations more than tripled to $278,280 from $55,326.88 in 2021. While the number of single-family permits issued was down, the number of basement finish, deck, addition, pool, and solar permits all increased. This shows that many families are choosing to remodel their homes instead of moving.
“These numbers show that while our residents have options, they are choosing to stay in Grimes and invest in the homes they currently have. It’s a testament to all the great development over the past few years and to our strong schools and thriving community,” said Pfaltzgraff.
